Pregame on the VC Scoreboard

Pregame on the VC Scoreboard

Last night, Robin and I took part in what has become our new tradition, celebrate our anniversary with the opening of hockey season. The Caps put on a show against the Bruins in their opener on the road and were coming home to face the Leafs. The only real question was if the Maple Leafs propensity for violence could put the Caps off their game and literally beat them into submission (especially without long time enforcer Donald Brashear). Coming back for our second year as season ticket holders, we greeted others who would be sharing our section for the next 42 games and settled into our now familiar vantage from the upper deck. Everyone loves the on the ice feel of the lower bowl, but sitting at the blue line in the front rows of the mezzanine means we have a great view of the whole ice and get to see every play develop from corner to corner. This meant that we had  a great view of the first two periods as the Caps precision passing and sound defense (yes, sound defense) gave them a 6-1. Unfortunately, it also meant we could clearly see the wide open passing lanes and poor positioning that allowed the Leafs to make the score much closer than the game seemed. All in all, it was a great night to be in Chinatown.

WeLoveDC used this image as part of its Weekend Flashback for 9/25 – 9/27. I shot these during the Nats 100th loss of the season, then combined the 5 consecutive together using GIMP, a free open source image editing program (because I can’t afford Adobe Photoshop right now). These types of images take quite a while to put together, but if they were shot well provide a unique look at action.

It was close, but the bullpen blew it again!

It was close, but the bullpen blew it again!

That’s right baseball fans, the Washington Nationals have lost 100 games two years in a row. I had the privilage of  being there to see thanks to some free tickets courtesy of the American Red Cross. It was actually a very good, although ridiculously long, game, but in true Nats fashion the bullpen couldn’t do what they needed to do. Fortunately, going to a baseball game is much easier win or lose, when you live within walking distance, so whether or not they’re even competitive next year I’m sure I’ll see my share of games. Enjoy some pictures below of other things at the stadium besides the game (I’ll give you a hint: the theme is “things to distract you from the bad play”)
